Chapter History

The roots of the Epsilon Chapter can be traced back to coincidence and the hard work of some dedicated men. It all began with a transfer student and a undergraduate student, both having a vision of bringing ODPhi to ASU. Robbie Aguilar, a Gamma Brother, had just transferred to ASU and wanted to bring the traditions of ODPh to the ASU campus. At the same time, Andy Ortiz had come across an article in the VISTA magazine and was impressed after reading about the positive force that ODPhi was providing at the University of Arizona. Richard Povencio, who was the VP of student affairs at ASU and would later become the group’s first advisor, was contacted by Andy in regards to bringing a chapter of ODPhi to ASU. Knowing that Robbie was already trying to bring the Brotherhood to ASU, Richardo introduced Andy to Robbie and at that moment the seed was planted for the birth of ODP at ASU. Their first meeting at the student union was the brainstorming session that began the laying of the foundation of the Epsilon Chapter at ASU. Deciding that It was the right time, Robbie and Andy began the search for the men that would make this dream a reality.

Many showed interest but only five men, Troy Gannon, Jason Garcia, Greg Gonzalez, Alberto Holguin, and Chad Vernia displayed the heart and commitment needed to fulfill the goal of establishing ODPhi as a positive influence upon ASU and the surrounding community. In the Fall of 1990 at El Paso, Texas, ASU was awarded a colony of ODPhi. Now began the struggle to show ASU the worth and vision of the first Hispanic-Founded fraternity on campus. Some organizations and individuals including many prominent Hispanic organizations and leaders, felt that Hispanics did not belong in a fraternity and sought to hinder ODPhi’s reputation and growth. In the face of extreme adversity, ODPhi perservered and continued to march towards its goals. ODPhi soon began to earn its reputation as a service fraternity through projects with organizations such as the Andre House Homeless Shelter, St Mary’s Church, and local high schools. After much organization and hard work, Jason Garcia and Chad Vernia attended the Fall 1992 Nationals at TTU to petition for recognition as an official chapter of ODPhi. The vote was unanimous and the Epsilon Colony was welcomed as the newest chapter of ODPhi. It was from this moment that Epsilon Chapter began it’s ascension to greatness.
